Luck, not merit, gets job
Unsuccessful, but deserving, candidates feel hard done by

Punatsangchu Hydroproject I - 10 August, 2009 - When Punatsangchu hydroproject I was finalised, the job prospects it offered came to the rescue of many unemployed vocational graduates from institutes around the country.

For Sonam Dema (name changed on request), it was a motivation to work harder and top the class so that she would be preferred when looking for a job. Sonam came fifth in her class and was confident that she would get the first job offer. On August 4, standing in a hallway of the labour ministry office in Thimphu, Sonam was ruing her fate.

Govt. given hoteliers’ wish list
Import duty waived, credit card facility in place and no 100 percent foreign equity ventures

9 August, 2009 - The hotel industry in Bhutan is booming. So say people, with places like Paro having a hotel at almost every corner. There are 140 hotels in 11 dzongkhags that cater to tourists. But many are occupied only once or twice in a year, say hoteliers.

Presenting the situation to the government on Wednesday, when the cabinet ministers met with the private sector, representatives of the hotel association of Bhutan (HAB) petitioned the government to look into the industry, stating that those in the business are in ‘trouble”.

His Majesty appoints eminent member to NC
8 August, 2009 -His Majesty the King today appointed Tashi Wangyal, a former member of the Royal Education Council, as one of the five eminent members to the National Council. Tashi Wangyal would replace Dasho Karma Ura who resigned from the position in June this year. 

“I am deeply humbled and honoured by the responsibility His Majesty the King has bestowed upon me,” said Tashi Wangyal after receiving the scarf from His Majesty at the Throne Room in Tashichhodzong.

Fraud, corruption confirmed
Audit slams labour ministry for unsatisfactory response to indictment

Basic Skills Development Program case 8 August, 2009 - The royal audit authority (RAA) has confirmed fraud and corruption in the Nu 371.47m basic skills development program (bsdp) case, after the labour ministry’s replies were found unsatisfactory.
