BCCI’s eastern fact finding tour

15 July, 2009 - Getting loans without collateral was a common problem for most small and medium businesses, say Bhutan chamber of commerce and industry (BCCI) officials, who are touring the central and eastern districts to learn about their problems and educate the business community on new opportunities. “We’re looking at a group scheme funding that financial institutions could take into confidence to lend out money to small businesses,” said BCCI president Topgyal Dorji, via telephone from Lhuentse.

Issues, related to problems of filing tax, proper services, expanding township areas, transportation and labour problems, were raised by the business communities of Trongsa and Bumthang. “These may seem simple needs to big businesses like in the capital and the southern areas, but are of utmost importance to these business people, whose families rely on their income,” said Tobgyal Dorji.

The president said that the issues raised by the people would be analysed and presented to the government, adding that the tour so far was interesting and fruitful. Chamber officials are also meeting with district administration officials

The nine-day tour, which ends on July 19, will cover Trongsa, Bumthang, Mongar, Lhuentse, Trashigang and Trashiyangtsi.
