Foreign minister heads for NAM summit

14 July, 2009 - The foreign minister, Lyonpo Ugyen Tshering, will lead a Bhutanese delegation to the 15th summit of the non-aligned movement (NAM) to be held in Egypt from July 15-16. With “International Solidarity and Peace for Development,” as the theme, the key issues to be discussed are the present global challenges and international developments in the sphere of peace and security, disarmament, climate change, human rights and rule of law, economic development and, in particular, the effects of the current global financial and economic crises on developing countries.

Bhutan became a member of NAM in 1973 and has taken active role in activities of the movement, especially by the permanent mission of Bhutan in New York, which covers the regular coordinating bureau meetings of NAM, states a press release from foreign ministry.

NAM holds a summit every three years and the last summit was held in Cuba, with the adoption of five do*****ents, urging solidarity among member countries to better respond to global threats and challenges. NAM at present has 118 members.

Lyonpo Ugyen Tshering will also present Bhutan’s 7th periodic report on the elimination of discrimination against women at the UN headquarters in New York on July 23. Bhutan, as a state signatory to the convention, is expected to submit periodic reports every four years to the committee.
