Smart money invests in women

14 July, 2009 - As Bhutan celebrated World Population Day on Saturday, the health minister, Lyonpo Zangley Drukpa, urged Bhutanese to eliminate discrimination against women and build on women’s roles as economic agents. The minister said that investing in women by educating them would benefit the nation. “Population growth is a major factor causing poverty, water and food scarcity around the world,” said Lyonpo Zangley Drukpa.

With the theme, “Protecting marginalised populations from the global crisis: Investing in women is a smart choice”, the day was celebrated at the Khasadrapchu middle secondary school, Thimphu.

The health minister also said that there could not be a better theme as a report, by the UN committee on the elimination of discrimination against women, reveals that women and girls in both developed and developing countries are the worst affected. The minister said that the study showed that, more than men, women invest earnings in the health and educating their siblings, which create employment opportunities, increases productivity and national income.

Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the UNFPA ambassador, graced the occasion.

Students of Khasadrapchu performed cultural activities and skits on equal rights to women. Villagers from Mewing gewog participated in a quiz competition on the theme.
