Sherubtse initiates three new courses

31 July, 2009 -Sherubtse college in Kanglung, earlier this week, launched three new courses, developed by its own lecturers, taking the number of royal university of Bhutan (RUB) courses offered in the college to 11.

Political science, history and sociology were launched after over two years of course development and preparation. There are 36 students in each course.

College director Singye Namgyal said that the college has both human and material resources to support early semesters of the courses.

“We’ve two lecturers for each course and one each for history and political science will join us next month,” said the director.

Some lecturers said that they have mixed feelings of satisfaction and anxiety of the successful completion of the courses.

“I’ve worked over it for three years. I’m confident of a productive batch of graduates from the course,” said Kencho Pelzom, a political science lecturer.

Paljor Gaylay, a history lecturer, teaches four periods a week. “The course has been subjected to repeated scrutiny by subject experts from reputed universities. It’ll all depend on the students but we’ll put in our best,” he said.

The director added that they are worried, as the courses are new in the country and that there is no base to compare. The new courses were validated last year.

With the introduction of three new courses, the number of students has increased to 960, about 200 more than last July. However, the director said that they have managed with the accommodation.

Sherubtse last year launched two new courses in sciences. It also has plans to launch two more courses next year.
